Understanding Motors for Drones and Servos
2019-05-16 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm EDT
On Thursday, May 16, 2019, the IEEE Consultants’ Network of Northern NJ (technologyontap.org) will host a presentation on Motors for drones and servos.
About the Topic
How Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors are constructed, their performance, and how to select them will be discussed. Both inside rotor and out runner motors, as used in drones, will be discussed. Brushless DC motors are used in high performance servo systems and in copter drones. They are capable of high power output in a given size, making them the motor of choice for weight or size sensitive applications. When properly applied they are enormously robust. Without resorting to heavy math, the basics of their design will be presented, so that attendees can have a more complete understanding of how they work and what design features to look for. Users of BLDC motors will be in a better position to ensure they get a motor that will meet their requirements.
About the Speaker
Steven Garfinkel received his B.Sc. and M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He has designed autopilots, flight control actuators, rescue hoists, cargo winches and industrial tools over his career of more the twenty five years. His company, Ellipsah LLC, provides complete servo system design services including custom motors and controllers if they are required. Steven can be reached at sgarfinkel@ellipsah.com or at (973) 432-7401.
CNNNJ Invites You to Join the Network
Founded in 1992, the IEEE Consultants Network of Northern NJ (CNNNJ) encourages and promotes the use of independent technical consultants by business and industry. The CNNNJ invites all engineers engaged in independent practice to join its ranks. For more details on member benefits and admission requirements, please visit our website at technologyontap.org.
